Tutti frutti comes from the Italian tutti i frutti, meaning all fruits. The name covers two quite different things: a colourful mix of chopped fruits, often candied, and a flavouring made to taste like many different fruits at once, with vanilla.
Where it came from
Tutti frutti has been a dessert for a long time. Tutti frutti ice cream appeared on the bill of fare for a dinner in England in 1860, and recipes for it were printed in cookbooks of the late 19th century.
